Research Launch: The Meaning of Home in a Multicultural Context: Disabled People’s Perspectives on Article 23 of the UNCRPD

The findings from this research contribute to a large body of Aotearoa-based and international evidence affirming disabled people’s right to choice and control over their supports. This includes how that support is delivered, who provides it, and the importance of formal supports for disabled people and their family, whānau, and aiga. Ultimately, this research underscores that all disability supports must be firmly grounded in both Te Tiriti o Waitangi and disability rights frameworks.

In light of this body of evidence, the New Zealand Government’s proposed changes to disability supports and services, particularly for family carers, are deeply troubling for disabled people, as well as their family, whānau, aiga and close supporters. As disabled and disability-inclusive researchers, we call for legislation and policy grounded in genuine consultation, data, and evidence.
